The ResidencyAs an artist in residence at Green Olive Arts in Tetouan, Morocco, January 9-February 14, 2017. I am seeking out the inspiration for the next period in my artistic development.
My ProcessI often begin with abstracts, working from both sides of the canvas with acrylic tints, mediums, and paints. The colorful backgrounds interact with the subjects, creating depth, motion, texture. Believing in the interplay between intention, materials, and universe, I respond with curiosity to the strange and wonderful evolution of each piece.
Why it MattersI see art as a form of literature, a way of creating understanding and compassion. I believe that art is intrinsically valuable, without any intended purpose beyond the making of art; yet, I’d like my work to have an impact towards social justice and healing. People have told me I work with joy, that my work has healed, held space, and positively impacted them. I am grateful that I have been able to communicate my joy and love for the process and myriad people and subjects of my paintings.
I paint what I know: going to Morocco is an opportunity to grow what I know exponentially, and bring this knowledge home to my community. I will exchange experiences, languages, inspirations, processes. I’ll return with new ideas, new understandings of myself and the world, and new friends. Those experiences and people will impact my classrooms (school, art, and yoga), my art, and my communities. |
